What to See

Vineyards: The UNESCO-listed landscape is one of the most unique in the world, with vineyards cultivated in small plots surrounded by walls of basalt stone. This distinctive form of viticulture has been practiced for centuries and is a key feature of Pico Island’s agricultural identity.
Wine Cellars: Visit the local wine cellars to learn about the production of the famous Verdelho wine, a unique white wine that is part of the island’s rich tradition. Many cellars offer guided tours and tastings.
Basalt Walls and Terraces: The landscape is marked by dry-stone walls that protect the vineyards from wind and salt, creating a unique and visually striking terrain. These walls also contribute to the distinct microclimates that allow the grapes to thrive.
Pico Island Volcano: In the background, the majestic Pico Volcano towers over the vineyards, providing dramatic scenery and adding to the island’s natural beauty.
Pico Wine Museum: Visit the Pico Wine Museum in Madalena for an in-depth look at the history of viticulture on the island, with exhibits on the traditional winemaking process, tools, and historical photos.
Traditional Wine Festivals: If you visit during the harvest season, you can participate in local festivals and events celebrating the island’s rich winemaking culture.
Scenic Views: Drive along the coast or hike through the vineyards to enjoy panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, neighboring islands, and the stunning landscapes that make Pico Island so special.
